What is Contrast?

Let’s talk about what contrast actually means in interior design. The definition is when two or more elements that have opposite characteristics are put together in the same room. Contrast can be added in many different ways. Such as the finish, color, shape, texture, size, or material. It is all about what style is trying to be achieved. You might be thinking, "Why add contrast to a space?" It adds visual depth to a space and creates a striking and memorable impression. It can highlight certain design elements in a room. Lastly, if done the right way, contrast adds balance to the atmosphere.

Color and Texture

Using a complementary color scheme is a fantastic way to create contrast. Complementary are two colors or shades that are opposite on the color wheel and are used together. One color is the accent, and the other is more dominant. Consider using the main color on the walls and the accent color as a fun backsplash. A great example is white and black, which will not go out of style. Maybe you don’t want something that is so bold; try doing neutrals. Instead of a sharp red, try going a couple of shades softer. Add in some texture, meaning bring in some rough or soft materials. An example of texture would be tile, furniture, accessories, décor, and the list goes on.

Materials and Shapes

Mix and match materials to show how important it is to have contrast in a space. This helps create a good final look. Furniture is a good example of this. Mix natural materials like stone or wood with metals like iron. For fabrics, think about something solid like leather paired with patterned items. Bringing in different shapes will also make the atmosphere visually appealing. Again, furniture is a way to bring in distinct shapes. In a living room, try making a sharp coffee table that is square. Then add some side tables that are circular. It is always fun to add a round or geometric mirror to the wall. The options are endless when it comes to contrast.
