The Hardt Furniture Standard

Overview

We’re pulling back the curtain on what really goes into the pieces we source—from solid wood construction to durable, high-quality fabrics—and why we typically steer away from big-box options unless requested.

When it comes to furnishing your home, one of the most common reactions we hear is surprise, especially when it comes to the cost of larger pieces like sofas, dining tables, dressers, and console tables. We completely understand. Furniture is a significant investment, and pricing can vary drastically depending on where you shop. Our goal is always to help you make sense of those differences so you feel confident, informed, and excited about the pieces you’re bringing into your home.

At our firm, we intentionally source from trusted vendors like Four Hands, Union Home, and Alder & Tweed because we’ve seen, time and time again, the level of quality and consistency they provide. These companies produce furniture that is thoughtfully designed, often crafted from solid wood, high-quality veneers used correctly, and durable, performance-driven fabrics that are made to last. Beyond the product itself, their shipping and delivery processes are reliable, which means fewer headaches, less damage, and a smoother experience overall for our clients.

Because of this, we typically prefer not to source from mass retailers like Amazon or Wayfair unless it’s specifically requested. One of the biggest reasons comes down to materials. Many pieces at lower price points are made with particle board or low-grade veneers that can chip, peel, or warp over time rather than true solid wood construction. Similarly, upholstery is often made from lower-quality synthetic fabrics that may not wear well, can pill, or lose their shape quickly with everyday use. While these materials can look great initially, they often don’t hold up to real life the way higher-quality materials do.

We always encourage our clients to have a clear sense of their furniture budget before we begin the design process. This allows us to guide you transparently, align expectations, and curate pieces that truly fit your lifestyle. As designers, we feel a responsibility to recommend furniture that not only looks beautiful but also performs beautifully over time—unless you’ve specifically asked us to prioritize otherwise. At the end of the day, investing in quality pieces means creating a home that not only looks good on day one, but continues to support your life for years to come.
