Why Ordering Samples is One of the Most Important Parts of the Design Process

By combining digital mood boards with physical samples, we give our clients the opportunity to fully connect with their design before any installation begins. This collaborative, hands-on approach helps create confidence in every decision and makes the design journey just as enjoyable as the finished result.‍

One of the most exciting moments in an interior design project happens when a design vision begins to move from the screen into the real world. While digital mood boards are an essential tool for developing a cohesive design direction, there is something special about experiencing materials in person. At Hardt Studio, we use both digital and physical tools to help our clients feel confident and excited about every selection made for their home.

The design process typically begins with carefully curated digital mood boards. These boards allow clients to see how colors, finishes, furniture, lighting, and materials work together as a complete concept. It is an efficient way to establish a visual direction and ensure we are aligned with our clients' style preferences before moving forward. Once clients approve the overall look and feel, we begin the next important step: ordering physical samples.

Samples provide something that digital images simply cannot. They allow clients to experience the true texture, scale, color variation, and quality of a material. A tile may look beautiful online, but seeing how it reflects light, feeling its texture, or understanding the size of its pattern can completely change the way it is perceived. The same is true for fabrics, flooring, countertops, and wall coverings. Samples help eliminate uncertainty and ensure selections feel just as good in person as they do on a screen.

One of our favorite ways to present samples is through a thoughtfully arranged flat lay. We carefully organize and style each material selection so clients can see how everything works together before it is installed in their home. Not only does this create a beautiful first impression, but it also makes the design feel more tangible and organized. Clients can pick up materials, compare finishes, move pieces around, and engage with the design in a hands-on way. It transforms the selection process from simply viewing images to actively experiencing the future space.

At the end of the day, great design is about more than just how a room looks—it is also about how it feels. By combining digital mood boards with physical samples, we give our clients the opportunity to fully connect with their design before any installation begins. This collaborative, hands-on approach helps create confidence in every decision and makes the design journey just as enjoyable as the finished result.
